'WTF?' - The Kola Superdeep Hole

The story goes: Russian scientists drilled a 14 km hole in Siberia, and when they lowered a microphone into the hole (why?) they captured 17 seconds of hellish screaming and moaning, before the mic melted.


Oh, I love this story! It’s so disturbing. The sound clip is scary, the idea that scientists would unwittingly open a portal to hell is brilliant. The fact that it was a hoax perpetrated by Evangelical Christians … even better!


The story has one foot in fact – the Kola Superdeep hole in Russia is just over 12 kms deep, the deepest hole on earth. There used to be a structure above it, but right now it’s protected only by a bolted-on manhole cover. It’s too small for a person to accidentally fall into, but still. Pretty creepy.


The distance is only about a third of the way through the earth’s outermost layer, nowhere near even the mantle of the earth. Hell lies just under our feet, apparently.
